The Cover Page

The cover page is of utmost importance, both for the print version and electronic version of a portfolio.  For the print version, a good cover page says a lot.  If it looks good, your reader is more likely to look through it.

Cover page without links

The cover page shown here has links to each page.  Even a non-web Word document can have hyperlinks.  Here's a list of some advantages of using hyperlinks in your portfolio's cover page:

If you have a lot of documents, you can easily find them when you're editing your portfolio's pages.

On the cover of your CD, you can give directions to click on just one file (the cover page).  The user will be able to navigate to the pages by clicking on the links instead of going back to the CD's explorer.

Cover page with links

To create a hyperlink, first select the word or words you want for the link.

Now go to Insert/Hyperlink on your menu.  You can also select the Hyperlink icon on your toolbar.

Select the file you want to link to.  That's pretty much it.  Now your hyperlink will open the file that you specified.

One last note on hyperlinks:  If you're creating a web (vs. a collection of documents) you might want to put links back to your cover page on all of your documents.
